HETiA Featured in “To Vima” Newspaper – AI and Microchips: It Takes Two to Tango

In his analysis, Dr. Zervakis underscores the strategic interdependence between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced semiconductor technologies. As AI continues to transform sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, and finance, its rapid evolution is fundamentally dependent on increasingly powerful and energy-efficient microchips. At the same time, semiconductor technologies themselves are progressively embedding AI capabilities across a wide range of applications — from automotive systems and smart devices to industrial and medical technologies.
The article highlights how AI progress in different applications such as medical research, enabling real-time analysis of diagnostic imaging, enhancing early disease detection, and significantly reducing the time required for drug discovery and clinical data analysis. However, Dr. Zervakis also addresses the regulatory and ethical considerations surrounding AI, emphasizing that technology must serve society collectively and support — rather than replace — human decision-making.
He further examines the growing global race for computational infrastructure and semiconductor production capacity. As increasingly complex AI algorithms demand exponential computing power, massive investments are required in data centers, fabrication facilities, and energy plans. The strategic response of west world — notably through the EU Chips Act and corresponding U.S. initiatives — aims to strengthen semiconductor autonomy and resilience.
Within this evolving landscape, Greece is emerging as a dynamic contributor to the European semiconductor value chain. The country hosts a vibrant ecosystem of companies — ranging from innovative start-ups to multinational corporations — specializing in chip design and electronic design automation (EDA) software development. These companies are represented by HETiA, which plays a central coordinating role in strengthening Greece’s position in the European microelectronics ecosystem.
Moreover, the establishment of the Hellenic Chips Competence Centre (HCCC) reinforces national capabilities in semiconductors, while the development of “Pharos,” Greece’s first AI Factory and part of a European network of AI infrastructures, further integrates the country into Europe’s strategic technological framework.
As Dr. Zervakis concludes, AI and microchips form a mutually reinforcing value chain: there is no Artificial Intelligence without semiconductors, and modern semiconductors increasingly integrate AI at their core. Indeed, it takes two to tango.
